Thanks to those who have already stepped forward with pledges of support, the school and Foundation have agreed to press ahead with the scheme. Our first Foundationer has been awarded his place (he is only 11 and will start at Hillside in 2010).
The scheme
- A succession of places at Hillside for boys who will clearly benefit from the experience.
- Parents or guardians will be means-tested and fee remission will be up to 100% - a little less than this where at all possible, as we believe some financial commitment to a child's education engenders a greater sense of ownership.
- Candidates must show passion and potential. They must also be able to contribute to the life of the House (the aim of the scheme is a two-way benefit). Selection will not be based solely on entrance exam results - the interview is a crucial element of the process.
- The committee and Housemaster will be consulted on the field of candidates, but the final decision will rest with the Headmaster.
- Supporters of the scheme will be acknowledged within the House.

Finance
We aim to support boys directly with the money raised (rather than creating an endowment and using the investment income from this). This means that our funds will go further, though the stream of income will need to continue into the future. For instance, 20 individuals contributing £50 each month with Gift Aid will provide for 50% of a Foundationer's fees. As the school is currently offering to cover half the fees, this is enough for a 100% award (though we believe that in all but the harshest financial situations parents should contribute something towards their son's education). But, as above, our ambition is to fund more than one place at a time; and with over 650 contactable Old Hillsiders, parents and past parents we believe we can do this.
And over time, with the benefit of legacies and any surplus over and above the fees we pay, we will begin to build an endowment sum, which will make our scheme ever more sustainable.

We need more donations to support this scheme. If you are a friend of the House - an OT, parent or past parent - and you share our belief that what Hillside has to offer is so good it should be shared a little more widely (and that this in turn will benefit the House), then please join the growing number who have given.
