The Tonbridge School Centre for Sports and Media

The Tonbridge School Centre is now open and the boys are making full use of the fantastic facilities

The Foundation is so grateful to all those who contributed towards the building of this project. The Centre will be opened officially by Sebastian Coe on Friday 13th June.

Foundation Awards

The Foundation Awards programme is designed to help fund a Tonbridge education, on a means-tested basis, for talented boys who would otherwise not be able to afford to come here. Widening access is a key aspect of the school's development programme. As part of the scheme,

Ferox Hall, Park House, Judde House, Hillside and Manor House have set up their own awards, which meet the Foundation Award criteria. Four Foundationers have now embarked on the programme and we hope to be in a position to fund 10 places by the end of 2009. The newest entrant started in early 2007, a boy whose academic talent was being wasted in his local comprehensive school; the Foundation Award will give him the opportunity to fully exploit his potential at Tonbridge.

ICT

Phase 1 of the school's ICT development project has seen the installation of a powerful new computer network. This is the main feature of a wider development programme which includes more technical support staff, wireless zones within the school and facilities to enable boys to connect their own laptops to the network.

We've installed a new digital telephone switchboard which now allows us to connect telephones over our computer network, thus saving thousands of pounds on direct telephone lines, and allowing expansion at minimal cost.

We have installed a video conferencing application which, as well as allowing us to hold online meetings (eg: with the Marsh Academy), can be used for boys off school to join in some lessons, and in the future will allow boys to chat to their parents online as well.

The configuration for laptop access is happening now, and is due for completion by the end of the Lent term.

Tonbridge's development plans are exciting and timely. The school is well-placed to inspire both its pupils and other schools in a more innovative and worldly approach to the fantastic opportunities ahead.

Technology allows us graphically to put across difficult concepts and to display experiment data in real-time. Undoubtedly, this is giving the boys a greater understanding of the subject.

The School held an evening seminar in January showcasing Tonbridge's technology in the context of the global IT revolution.
